In this lesson:
Integrating Financial Literacy Through Guided Reading
Our guided reading texts are carefully embedded within our financial literacy schemes to sit seamlessly alongside the curriculum. Designed to complement and reinforce key financial concepts, these texts provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to explore financial ideas through high-quality reading experiences.
The texts can be delivered flexibly within reading or English sessions, supporting teachers in making purposeful curriculum connections without adding extra burden. Through structured discussion, targeted vocabulary, and explicit reading strategies, pupils deepen their understanding of both literacy and financial concepts.
By combining reading comprehension with real-world financial contexts, the texts encourage critical thinking, discussion, and application of knowledge. Pupils develop key reading skills, such as inference, retrieval, and vocabulary development, while simultaneously building confidence and understanding in financial literacy.
This integrated approach ensures financial education is not taught in isolation, but reinforced through language, discussion, and meaningful engagement with texts, helping pupils make connections that last beyond the classroom.
In this guided reading lesson, pupils explore the deeper question of who really controls money and how financial decisions shape society. Through a thoughtful, non fiction text, they examine digital money, risk, trade offs, ownership, and responsibility, considering how choices made by individuals, businesses, and governments affect others. By discussing ethics, influence, and behaviour, pupils develop critical thinking skills and learn that financial literacy is not just about managing money, but about using power carefully and making intentional, informed decisions.
