In this lesson, pupils explore how and why families make different financial choices. They learn that families have different situations, needs, and priorities, which can affect how money is spent or saved. Through discussion and case study activities, pupils practise talking respectfully about money choices without making judgements. The lesson helps children develop empathy and understand that financial decisions are shaped by circumstances, not right or wrong answers.

PSHE:

This lesson supports the Year 1 National Curriculum for Mathematics by developing mathematical talk and comparative reasoning when discussing different financial choices. Pupils explore how numerical differences do not represent value judgements, using careful language to compare quantities and explain reasoning without attaching personal or moral assumptions.

This lesson supports PSHE objectives R7 or R8, R22 or R31, L11 or L18 and L24 by helping pupils understand that families may make different financial choices based on their circumstances, develop respectful communication when discussing differences, recognise that situations vary across households, and reflect on how to avoid judgement while showing empathy and understanding.
