Budgeting

In this lesson, pupils learn what a budget is and why planning how to use money is important. They explore how money can be shared between spending, saving, and giving, and practise creating a simple budget for a goal. Pupils then consider how situations can change in real life and learn that budgets sometimes need to be adjusted. Through practical activities, children develop the skill of adapting a budget while staying within a set amount of money and explaining the reasons for their choices.

PSHE:

This lesson supports the Year 1 National Curriculum for Mathematics by enabling pupils to solve problems involving money in practical contexts, recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p), and plan and adjust a simple budget within a fixed amount. Pupils apply calculation and reasoning to ensure they remain within available funds when circumstances change.

This lesson supports PSHE objectives L11, L12, L18, L20 and L21 by helping pupils understand that financial decisions affect themselves and others, recognise the importance of planning and adapting when situations change, develop responsibility and self control in spending and saving, and reflect on fairness and contribution when allocating money.
