In this lesson, pupils explore why people have to make choices about money. They learn that money comes from time and effort, is limited, and cannot be spent unless it is already available. Through practical activities, pupils consider what happens when money is spent on one thing and cannot be used for something else. Using simple scenarios and a budgeting task, children practise making spending decisions, saving, and explaining their choices, building an early understanding of planning and responsible money use.

This lesson supports the Year 1 National Curriculum for Mathematics by enabling pupils to solve problems involving money in practical contexts, including making spending choices within a fixed amount and recognising that money is limited. Pupils apply simple calculation and reasoning to ensure they do not exceed a given budget.
This lesson supports PSHE objectives L10, L11, L12, L18, L20 and L24 by helping pupils understand that money is earned through time and effort, recognise that financial choices have consequences, explore the importance of waiting, saving and planning ahead, and develop awareness of responsibility, fairness and seeking adult guidance when needed.
