Credit & Risk

In this lesson, pupils explore the idea of financial risk and consider what might go wrong when raising money through their cake sale. They learn that risk means something may not go to plan and begin to identify situations where money could be lost or wasted. Through ranking potential risks and suggesting practical ways to reduce them, children develop problem solving skills and understand how careful planning can protect the money they are trying to raise.

PSHE:

This lesson supports the Year 1 National Curriculum for Mathematics by enabling pupils to solve practical problems involving money in the context of planning a cake sale, reason mathematically about likelihood, consequences and possible outcomes, and apply their understanding that spending money involves risk. Pupils compare options, rank levels of risk and justify decisions using simple financial reasoning.

This lesson supports PSHE objectives L22, H38 and H39 by helping pupils recognise different types of risk, understand that financial decisions can have consequences, and develop strategies to reduce risk and make safer, more responsible choices when working towards a shared goal.
