Budgeting

In this lesson, pupils learn what a budget is and why planning how money is spent is important. Building on their chosen cause, they explore how to organise a cake sale by comparing recipes, calculating ingredient costs, and considering how pricing affects profit. Children begin to think like business owners, weighing up risk, cost, and value, and understanding that careful budgeting helps ensure they raise money successfully rather than overspending.

Maths:

PSHE:

This lesson supports the Year 1 National Curriculum for Mathematics by enabling pupils to recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p), solve problems involving money including making sensible spending choices and estimating costs, and reason about value for money when planning a simple budget. Pupils compare prices, calculate totals and justify decisions based on cost and potential outcome.

This lesson supports PSHE objectives L11, L18 and L21 by helping pupils understand how financial decisions can affect themselves and others, develop responsibility and self control when planning spending, and recognise how careful budgeting supports fairness, shared goals and positive outcomes within a community.
