Budgeting

Pupils are introduced to why families need to plan how they use their money. Using a real life example of paying for a residential trip, children explore the ideas of saving, spending, scarcity, and trade offs. They learn that because money is limited, choosing one thing often means giving up another. Through discussion and group activities, pupils practise weighing up costs and benefits and spotting common mistakes people make when thinking about money choices.

PSHE:

This lesson supports the Year 1 National Curriculum for Mathematics M5 and M6 by developing pupils’ understanding of money as a measure of value and exchange within real life contexts. Pupils apply mathematical thinking when considering saving, spending and paying over time, and reason about quantities, trade offs and practical financial planning.

This lesson supports PSHE Economic Wellbeing objectives L11, L12, L18 and L20 by helping pupils understand that families make financial choices based on limited resources, recognise the concept of scarcity and trade offs, and develop awareness of planning, saving and responsible decision making when managing money over time.
