In this lesson students will explore how people build wealth over time by comparing saving with investing and seeing how interest makes money grow . They will investigate simple and compound interest, decode real bank account information and understand why different saving products offer different levels of access and reward. Through practical calculations and challenges they will see how time, risk and growth rates shape long term outcomes and why some people choose higher risk options to increase potential returns. By the end students have a clear sense of how money can grow safely or more ambitiously and how to make informed decisions about their own future finances.

PSHE:

This lesson supports the National Curriculum for Mathematics by enabling pupils to use percentages, ratio and proportion to calculate financial growth and compare returns over time. Pupils apply understanding of exponential growth through compound interest calculations, using formulae to model how savings increase across multiple years. They interpret financial data such as AER, compare rates, and reason mathematically about the impact of time, growth rate and proportional change on long term financial outcomes.

This lesson supports PSHE Living in the Wider World objectives LWW3 and LWW7 by helping pupils understand how to manage money effectively and plan for future financial choices, including saving and investing. Pupils assess the risks and benefits of different financial decisions, evaluate how time and compound growth influence wealth building, and develop awareness of balancing opportunity with risk when considering long term financial security.
