In this lesson, students a grounded, realistic look at borrowing, Buy Now Pay Later, and how small choices can snowball into real financial consequences. They compare different borrowing situations, explore interest, late fees and credit scores in plain language, and see how these ideas play out through practical number examples. The aim is to help students recognise when borrowing is useful, when it’s risky and how to think ahead before saying yes to “easy” money.

PSHE:

This lesson supports the National Curriculum for Mathematics by enabling pupils to apply ratio and proportion to calculate borrowing with simple interest, compare repayment amounts, and analyse how additional charges affect total cost. Pupils also use probability to model financial risks and outcomes, exploring how missed payments, late fees and interest increase overall financial impact.

This lesson supports PSHE Living in the Wider World objectives LWW6 and LWW7 by helping pupils understand the risks of borrowing from friends, family or lenders, recognise the potential consequences of overspending, debt and gambling style financial behaviours, and develop practical strategies to manage risk when making financial decisions. Pupils explore how interest, late fees and credit ratings affect long term financial wellbeing and learn to evaluate when borrowing may be necessary versus when it creates avoidable risk.
