Money Awareness

In this lesson, students dig into what tax is, why we pay it, and how it changes the money we actually take home. They’ll explore real payslips, work through simple deductions, and unpack the fairness and purpose of tax through relatable scenarios and discussion.

PSHE:

This lesson supports the National Curriculum for Mathematics by enabling pupils to apply skills in percentages and ratios to calculate tax and National Insurance deductions from gross pay, determine net pay, and compare proportional differences between payslips. Pupils use percentage calculations to reason about fairness, contribution and proportional impact.

This lesson supports PSHE by helping pupils understand why tax and National Insurance are deducted from earnings, recognise how these contributions fund public services and support society, and explore the responsibilities and risks associated with employment, including understanding payslips, legal work and long term financial consequences.
