IN THIS LESSON
In this lesson students learn how young drivers can compare Personal Contract Purchase and Hire Purchase agreements to decide which option best suits their needs. They begin by examining car adverts and identifying which deals lead to ownership and which do not, helping them understand that finance offers often highlight attractive monthly payments while hiding key conditions such as mileage limits, balloon payments and total cost.
Students then build their knowledge through video guidance and terminology matching activities, clarifying how each finance option works and how factors such as interest rates, deposits and final payments shape affordability. They apply this understanding to realistic student scenarios, deciding whether PCP or HP is the most suitable choice and justifying their reasoning using accurate financial vocabulary.
Finally students research the cost of a first car using finance calculators, comparing monthly payments, overall cost and long term implications. By the end they can evaluate car finance deals confidently, understand the trade-offs between ownership and flexibility and make informed decisions based on their budget, driving habits and income stability.
