IN THIS LESSON

In this lesson, students investigate why the money they expect to earn isn’t always the money they take home. They unpack payslips to understand gross pay, net pay, tax, National Insurance, pensions, and other deductions, exploring how each element affects real disposable income .

Students compare the experiences of an apprentice, a retail worker, and a graduate to see how employment type, pay structure, and living costs shape financial outcomes.

Through guided tasks, they calculate deductions, analyse differences in pay, and examine how inflation and rising living costs influence budgeting decisions. By the end, students have a clearer grasp of how earnings translate into real financial freedom, and how fairness, transparency, and planning play a central role in managing money.
