IN THIS LESSON
In this lesson students deepen their understanding of mortgages by exploring how different choices affect both monthly payments and long term ownership. They begin with a comparison of equity and negative equity to understand why two homeowners with similar mortgages can be in very different financial positions. This sets the foundation for analysing how ownership builds over time and why falling house prices or high borrowing can create risk.
Students then examine fixed rate and variable rate mortgages, comparing how interest changes influence repayment costs and stability. Through guided activities they read and interpret sections of a mortgage agreement, identify confusing terms and rewrite key ideas in clear language to ensure they understand how different features work in practice.
Finally students apply their learning to real scenarios, including the impact of rising interest rates and the trade-offs involved in remortgaging or extending a mortgage term. By the end they can evaluate how individual circumstances, risk tolerance and financial goals shape mortgage decisions and why small choices can have major long term consequences.
